A matter of opinion?

I recently read an article by a very well-known Canadian CD that was titled “How to ruin your career in 6 easy steps”.

While I can appreciate the advice that’s given in the article, especially in reference to gaining the digital experience as soon as one can, the rest of the advice didn’t sit well with me.. And here’s why:  in a business like advertising, nothing is cut and dry, black and white, yes or no. It’s super subjective. And so is the way one chooses to handle their career.

I don’t think moving agencies is something that should be looked down upon. Every person’s got their own reasons for doing what they have to do. Sure, money can be a big factor. But what about working somewhere that promised you a bunch of stuff that hasn’t come through. Why stay around any longer than you need? What about dealing with a harsh, mean boss who you’ve learned nothing from? Again, why stay any longer that you need to?

If I recall correctly, in an article Neil French shared once, he detailed his bounteous movements around the industry – and most times he made it clear it was for nothing more than money.

Huh. Seemed to do his career good.

Of course, I’m no where near the level of creative genius the CD who originally wrote the article is, I just think that when it comes your career, there’s a lot more than SIX things that can make or break it.  At least, I sure hope so.

 What do you think?

Do the Cannes-Cannes

I look forward to the week ahead. Not only is there some awesome World Cup action going on, but the 2010 Cannes Lions Advertising Awards kick off tomorrow.

For advertising, its a great time of year. A time to reflect upon the work, honour the best (and the runners up), and a time to take pride in the hard work we’ve all committed to (whether winners, finalists or not).

Having been lucky enough to have attended the beach filled, sun filled, week of awarding before, I’ve discovered it’s also a great week of brain filling, aka learning. With all the workshops and seminars there’s no way one can walk away without something new they can take back and share with the office.

Its also a wonderful opportunity to get out there, meet people from around the world, and celebrate this wonderful, crazy world we call advertising.

Good luck and fun to all this week! Safe travels Cannes goers.

Creativity speaks for itself. And it usually says, "cha-ching".

Thought of the day:

There’s a tendency to dismiss “creativity”, before even thinking about what it can do for a brand.

I’ve had the same point of view since I started working in this business. Do creative work, and it’ll stand out. When your brand stands out, your business does well.

I happened upon the following article on twitter and thought I’d share. It’s true after all. Business success depends on creativity folks.

Perhaps they’ve just put it more eloquently than I have.

It’s about time someone spoke about this.

An excellent article on why judging for International Award Shows just might not work.

Thank you Ad Age for publishing this:

World Cup fever.

image

I love most sports…baseball, football, hockey. Yet the one sport I don’t tend to follow is the one sport I can’t get enough of right now - soccer.

Every four years the World Cup comes around and everything seems to stop. The world is focused on nothing but the game. I know and understand (for the most part) the rules, but for some reason just don’t have the interest to stay abreast of the happenings the years in between the Cup. Which is weird…cause soccer players are pretty caliente. Which is good enough reason to watch regardless.

There’s just something about the World Cup that draws me in like the band wagon fan I am. I think its the fans themselves. I’m a sucker for them. For no other reason than the pride, respect and love they emulate for their teams and countries.

It’s inspiring to see the World bond. And so what if it’s over sports.

Soccer: good for your legs, and for your soul.

Experiencing technical difficulties...

image

OK, not me personally.

But you will see that the blog hass seemed to have experienced some technical difficulties.

Alas, postings will begin again this weekend, no fear.

I’ve moved twice in the last month and needless to say missopinioated’s been a tad overwhelmed.

 Opinions coming at’cha shortly.
