Do the Cannes-Cannes

image

Cannes.

A truly inspiring experience.

I feel so blessed to have been able to scoot away for a few days to the French Riviera, see some mind-blowing work, hang with my friends and meet a ton of other amazing people.

The night of the final gala was my favourite. Loved seeing Dan Wieden accept the Lion of St. Mark.  This was my second time attending the festival. And while nothing of mine even shortlisted, it was a great reminder of why I like this business so much.

Rejuvenated and ready to do some kick-ass work this year.

Till 2013 Cannes! (unless the Mayans were right).

It's that "KIND" of day

image

I was sitting on the train this morning, reading, JLO blaring from my headphones, when a man across from me started pointing at me.

What? Did I have a booger? Was I sitting in someone else’s seat.

I looked at him and just smiled.

Seconds later he was motioning again. I wiped my nose just to be sure there was nothing dangling from it and then finally, albeit a little annoyed by his consistent gesturing, removed my earphones and politely inquired about what he wanted.

 “Yes, sir?”

“Um, you have a huge green caterpillar crawling on your shoulder.”

“Excuse me?”

“Your shoulder, you have a big green bug on it.”

“WHAT??”

I glanced to my left shoulder, and there, sparkling in the sunlight that was streaming through the window as though it were in the spotlight, was a huge, violently bright green caterpillar. It only took a second before I was out of my seat dancing in the aisle (ya, I’m scared of bugs, so what?)

Apparently my antics were amusing, because I had him in stitches. Then without my asking, he ever so kindly picked the caterpillar up and threw it down the aisle of the train on the floor. He then brushed off my seat as to double check that there were no other ones and then gestured for my return to it.

I looked around. No one else had looked up to see what was happening.

No one else cared that a caterpillar had been crawling on me?!

His gesture really touched me, (I know, it was just a caterpillar), but I think kindness is far and few between these days. Even more so when it’s exchanged between two strangers.

So I thank the kind man on the train, (a stranger to me). As I’m pretty sure he saved me from discovering that little green creature on my own accord (and thus everyone else on that train from blood curling screams).

Happy Wednesday, everyone. If anything, be kind today.

Is it Saturday yet?

image

Is it bad that my idea of the perfect Saturday night consists of a hot bath, a glass of wine and a stack of magazines? (please say no, please say no).

I asked my friend the same question and she said recommended I keep my Saturday evening hobbies to myself. (for the record Sammy, no, I’m not 55!).

But in all seriousness on any given night, you can catch me with a book, or more likely a magazine in hand. I took the New Years resolution to read more to heart.

Here’s (for the most part) a list of my must-have editions every month:

-       Conde Nast Traveller

-       NY Magazine

-       NY Times Magazine

-       Toronto Life

-       Details

-       Fast Company

-       AdAge

-       Vogue

-       The Economist

-       Food & Drink (the free one you get from the liquor store)

-       Harper’s

-       The New Yorker

-       Luerzer’s Archive

-       Vanity Fair

-       GQ

-       InStyle

-       And Hustler (just kidding, wanted to make sure you were still paying attention).

I’m always looking for more cool reads, so if you’ve got any other suggestions on what to add to the list, just holler.

iPhone love.

image

Okay, no making fun, but I just, like, literally just got my first iPhone (the 4S) and I love it! I’ve been addicted to it all weekend. It’s got me wondering how I’ve even existed without it. Favourite app thus far? Instagram. And the Starbucks one. I think it’s safe to say, ‘so long BlackBerry’. I’m truly converted - Apple owns me and every tech device I have.

You don't say.

Hot off my post yesterday, the Cannes predictions are starting to roll in.

First up? German CD Dom Heinrich.

What he’s proposing?

Well, you’re going to have to check out his Pinterest link for the full details, but to name a few (that I completely agree with) TNT “Push to Add Drama” and Mercedes “Invisible Car”.

I have to admit, I totally disagree with his call on the Swedish Armed Forces “Who

Cares” project. Good idea, but not really Lion worthy.

You can see all the predictions and decide whether you agree or not, here

*I would add BBH’s “The Three Little Pigs” Guardian work to this list

Open for business.

image

I’m back. And open for business.

(I know, I know, it’s about time).

Lets just say the long hiatus from the blog was good for the mind and soul.

Plus, it’s a think it’s just a better way of saying I’ve been lazy.

But, summer’s here and that means back to the blog I go.

 First up?

Cannes countdown is on.

Who’s all going?

I’m pretty stoked this time around. I’ve got some entries and actually made the cut for the Massive party (phew). So all is good.

I’m curious to see what work takes Titanium and the new Environmental Lion award.

One of my favourite (yes, that’s right, I’m back to spelling the Canadian way), campaigns this year includes: the Direct TV spots (I’m biased, they’re out of Grey NY). Simple, funny and to the point. People have been talking – and not just ad people. That’s how I measure creative effectiveness.

Hope they pick up something.

… 12 days to go.
